YORK HARBOR - Although the Second Annual Dockside Striper Tournament began with wild weather, it didn't dampen the zeal of its fishermen or the success of the event.
The two-day tournament raised over $40,000 through registrations, sponsorships, the raffle and auction. Proceeds from which will be shared by both York Hospital's Caring for All program and The Coastal Conservation Association of Maine (CCA).
The June 23 Captain's Party, which followed the June 22 event, drew over 150 fishermen and their guests to soak in the view from the Dockside Guest Quarters & Restaurant, while generously opening their wallets for the silent auction and raffles with prizes ranging from a Honda motor and framed prints of Portsmouth Harbor to Rods, Reels and Red Sox tickets.
The grand prize winners of this year's tournament included 10-year-old Niko Alexandropoulos of North Hampton, N.H., with a fish measuring 43 inches long.
Other winners in the Youth category were Adam Brown, 12, Pepperell, Mass., 39½ inches; Matt Brown, 8, Pepperell, Mass., 38 inches; Alex Boulous, 14, Middleton, Mass., 32.5 inches, and Matt Webber, 12, York, 20.5 inches.
In the Adult Bait/Tackle category the top five were Jeremy Reynolds of York for 42¾ inches; Michael Leatherman of Dover, N.H., 42½ inches; Brett Camplin of South Portland, 42 inches; Jared Webber of York, 42 inches, and Tom Brown of York, 41¾ inches.
In the Fly Fishing division the winners were Bob Hoy of York Harbor for 38 inches; John Carlson of Kittery Point, 24 inches; Julius Ciembroniewicz of Portland, 23 inches; Joe Kozak of Manchester, 22¾ inches, and Ben Lowenstein of York, 21½ inches.
As a special thank-you for participating, all youth fishermen were surprised with a Quantum Reel & Rod donated by Brian Noyes and a fully-stocked Cabela's Tackle & Tote bag.
"York Hospital is fortunate to be part of such a generous community," said York Hospital President Jud Knox, adding this community is one that "values, enjoys and supports all of the resources that surround them."
Both York Hospital and CCA also thanked the Lusty family, owners of the Dockside Guest Quarters & Restaurant and York Harbor Marine Services, for donating the venue for the event.
