NHSPA Photography Programs on Star Island, Isles of Shoals are scheduled for August and September. A Weeklong Digital Photography Workshop, limited to 20 participants, with professional photographer Peter Randall, will be held Aug. 10 to 16 and will include daily assignments and critiques to help participants sharpen their creative vision. Later in the week participants make prints for an informal exhibit. This is not a beginner program so participants must have some experience with photography, be open to trying new approaches to making images and be familiar with their digital cameras. Participants should bring a tripod, filters and other photography equipment, and a laptop if available. The 11th Annual Photographers' Retreat, limited to 35 participants, will be held Sept. 11 to 14. The special guest for the retreat is former Boston Globe staffer and longtime freelance photographer Ulrike Welsch. Not a workshop, this popular program is an opportunity to share images with other experienced photographers, to view presentations of various photography techniques and to be inspired to expand one's creative vision. The programs are held at the Star Island Conference Center that offers a unique opportunity for landscape, bird, and marine photographers. Photography Workshop with Stephan Johnson, one of America's leading landscape photographers and a pioneer digital photographer, will be held in Portsmouth, N.H., on Aug. 9. Johnson will conduct the workshop for members and friends of the New Hampshire Society of Photographic Artists at South Church, 292 State St., from 1 to 6 p.m. The California-based Johnson will just be completing two weeks of programs at Maine Media Workshops in Rockport. Pianist Tony DeBlois will be appearing at the Youth Enrichment Center at Hilton-Winn Farm on Aug. 9 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. DeBlois, 32, who is from Randolph, Mass., is blind and has autism. He is diagnosed with Savant Syndrome, and can play about 8,000 songs from memory. DeBlois has been playing the piano since he was 2 years old.  Early in his career, DeBlois studied at the Perkins School for the Blind. In 1989 he was awarded a summer scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass., and was later admitted as a full time student and graduated 1996. DeBlois specializes in jazz but can play just about any other type of music as well. He plays 20 musical instruments and has held concerts worldwide. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
