Article Image CAT SHOW! Heartwood College of Art proudly presents an innovative benefit exhibition and sale, "CATastrophic," through Aug. 22, featuring original, cat-themed artwork by well-known Maine artists as well as adults with developmental disabilities from Maine and California. All proceeds will support the Safe Haven Humane Society and Heartwood College of Art. Safe Haven is a no-kill animal rescue group serving southern York County by providing temporary sanctuary for abused, abandoned and unwanted companion animals and promoting humane treatment and responsible pet care. "It was a natural collaboration," commented Susan Wilder, curator of the exhibition, as she and Heartwood President Berri Kramer are both cat enthusiasts who appreciate Safe Haven's philosophy and mission and wanted to help the all-volunteer organization. And, as Kramer put it, "Cats make fabulous subjects for art work. They really capture your interest, with their graceful bodies, appealing expressions and humorous antics." Pictured here are "Cat" by M.P. Hopkins and "Cat of Many Stripes" by Jennifer Blaauw. For more information about the exhibit, call 985-0985 or visit http://www.heartwoodcollegeofart.org/.

Article Image A DELICIOUS WAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Fans of Shore Road Market's famous $8.99 lobster rolls can now help two worthy causes just by enjoying these delicious sandwiches. Owners Bill and Sheri Bastian, Chef Richie, Manager Paul Orben and the staff at Shore Road Market are donating funds from their lobster roll sales to benefit the York Police Department's DARE Program and York High School Project Graduation. As Bill Bastian explained, "For every lobster roll we sell, we're going to put a portion of the sale away and on a yearly basis we're going to donate the money." At the end of each year, half of the funds raised will go to DARE and the other half will go to Project Graduation. Since the Shore Road Market staff has many fans of their lobster rolls, Bastian said they felt this would be "a good way of giving back to the community." To find out more about this tasty way to support two good causes, visit Shore Road Market during regular business hours, Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday or Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or on Sunday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., or call 363-6533.
