Article Image STEP BACK IN TIME! The Jackson House in Portsmouth, N.H., has had a few different facades in its 344 years of sitting above North Mill Pond at 76 Northwest St., and it will soon have another. Since Portsmouth was founded, city dwellings have been protected from the weather with thin, overlapping wood planks known as clapboards. The siding, which got its name from the Dutch work klappen, to split, was originally hand-split from logs of local white pine. Eventually, saws turned out the necessary building material. The open season for area Historic New England's continues through Oct. 15. The Jackson House is open the first and third Saturday of each month and house tours are given every hour on the hour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the last tour beginning at 4 p.m. For more, call (603) 436-3205 or visit www.historicnewengland.org.

Andy Warhol: Pop Politics, a new exhibition at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, N.H., opens Sept. 27. Warhol did for art in the 20th century what Michelangelo did in the 16th century - he brought it to the people. As the pioneer of the Pop art movement he remains one of the most respected and controversial American artists. Andy Warhol: Pop Politics will be on display through Jan. 4, 2009, a mere week and a half before the presidential inauguration. The exhibit offers a probing and entertaining look at the leaders who shaped the 20th century through Warhol's eyes. Here, together for the first-time, are Warhol's paintings, prints, drawings, and photographs of political figures. His portraits of American presidents and presidential candidates, foreign queens, Communist dictators and other political figures reveal intriguing, yet until now unexplored insights into Warhol's own celebrity status and political leanings. Warhol's images of these powerful personalities comment on the interrelationships between politics and celebrity culture in the late 20th century - connections that remain ever present today.
