Theodore Ogden

YORK HARBOR - Theodore R. Ogden, 88, formerly of Middleton, Mass., and San Jose, Calif., died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in York Hospital.

He was born Dec. 30, 1919, in Middleton, son of George and Grace (Gould) Ogden. He graduated from Middlebury College with a degree in literature.

He was a naval aviator during World War II and during the Korean War, and flew F-4-F Hellcats from the U.S.S. Bunker Hill and the U.S.S. WASP in the Pacific. He achieved the rank of lieutenant commander.

He was a writer and businessman. He played a large role in the planning and development of Pleasure Island. He enjoyed traveling Europe and Japan and was an avid reader throughout his life.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Teena M. (Gloekler) Ogden, and many nieces and nephews, including Marilyn P. Webber of Middleton, Mass., and David P. Webber of York.

Funeral services will be private with Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home directing arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

 

John Witherbee

YORK HARBOR - John Hemenway Witherbee, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, in York Harbor.

Known as Jack, he was the son of Silas H. and Alice Kortright Witherbee. Jack grew up in Greenwich, Conn., served in the Navy during World War II and became a teacher and coach at Greenwich Country Day School and then at Renbrook School in West Hartford, Conn.

A graduate of the Choate School and Columbia University, Jack loved fishing, hunting and above all teaching and coaching.

He is predeceased by his wife Jill Macrae Witherbee and leaves four sons, Silas H. Witherbee of Concord, Mass., Jonathan G. Witherbee and his wife Rosamond of Cape Neddick, Matthew M. Witherbee and his wife Allison of Easton, Conn., and Andrew G. Witherbee and his wife Nancy of Newburyport, Mass.; a brother, Walter Witherbee of Naples Fla.; nine grandchildren, and his former wife Mary Osborne Witherbee of Princeton, N.J.

A memorial service will be held on Nantucket this fall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jill M. Witherbee Scholarship Fund at the Westminster School in Simsbury, Conn.
