YORK - After the first week in the regular season, York High School athletic teams have seen a variety of results.

The girls' cross-country team (33) defeated Freeport (40), Poland (71) and Waynflete (96) at a challenging Pineland course.

Coach Candace Jaffe commented, "Our most definitive competition came from Freeport... We had our work cut out for us, and knew that we would have to break up their pack style of running. The York girls all ran extremely well, from the front to the back. Our top seven runners met the challenge, and held off Freeport runners."

Michaela Swiatek (20:44) placed second, while Molly Carl (22:08), Reaha Goyetche (22:32), Monique Boutin (23:12) and Brianna Eaton (23:34) were all in the top 10 finishers as well.

Carl and Goyetche won individual battles against Freeport's number 2 and 3 runners, while Eaton ran a "breakthrough race" by breaking into scoring position for York.

Liz Ferland (23:57) and Kirsten Dean (24:14) rounded out the top seven runners for York.

The boys' cross-country team also ran at Pineland on Sept. 12. They scored an impressive 19 points in the meet against Freeport (60), Poland (67) and Waynflete (102). Alex Moser won the race (17:40), and Dan Herbein (18:49), Tristan Palhof (19:00), Brian Farrell (19:10) and Aaron Waldman finished third through sixth, respectively. Josh Herbein (19:36) crossed the line in eighth place, followed closely by Mitchell Finitz (19:41) in tenth.

The York boys utterly demolished the competition with their superior pack time by finishing five runners in the top six places, with Herbein and Finitz close behind.

In an e-mail to the team, Coach Ted Hutch told his athletes, "All 43 York starters finished the grueling course. Moser ran his best time and most of you ran closer to him."

He also urged his runners, "Don't worry about the ‘slow' time" due to the hilly landscape.

York High School field hockey lost in heartbreaking fashion to Greeley in their first game of the season.

The girls out-shot their opponents 16 to 4, but were forced into a double-overtime defeat.

Coach Barbara Marois gave praise for "strong games from Hannah Keating, Linnie Blais and Danielle Clements."

Next, the girls suffered a difficult 0-3 loss to Falmouth.

The Wildcats "were not really able to generate much of an attack," Marois commented, "only posting two shots for the game."
