YORK HARBOR - The York Art Association recently created its first "Poetry Walk" in Moulton Park, which is located directly across from the association's home gallery on York Street in York Harbor.
The walk is marked by a series of printed copies of poetry, encased in waterproof frames, at various locations within the park.
According to representatives of the York Art Association, the intention is to provide an opportunity for thoughtful recreation and inspiration to residents, visitors and artists as they travel through the park or view the scenic beauty of the community.
The poetry selections will be changed at various times throughout the year by the association's members.
This walk at Moulton Park is the first test installation for what is proposed to be a community-wide series of walks throughout York.
This new initiative comes as the York Art Association is reported to be enjoying remarkable growth as it prepares to embark on its first year-round schedule beginning this coming January. Members have attributed the growth to the broadened scope of the association's mission. A new and recently ratified constitution mandates that the organization embrace a wider scope of artistic activities to include the visual arts, literary arts, performing arts and artful crafts.
The new constitution is the product of a steering committee report submitted last year b a volunteer group of community-minded individuals led by Nancy Gustad that met throughout the summer of 2007 and planned a program of growth that would ensure a vibrant arts association for York and its surrounding environs.
