YORK VILLAGE - The York Public Library has announced "Sunday Afternoon at the Movies," a series of five films to be shown on Sunday afternoons throughout the fall.
All screenings will start at 3 p.m., the public is invited and admission is free.
The series is made possible by the Library Film Group, which is composed entirely of volunteers. In addition, there will be free popcorn, and beverages will be offered for $1.
"Dial M for Murder" (1954) will be shown Oct. 12. The first of three Alfred Hitchcock classics to be shown this fall, this intricate thriller follows one-time tennis star Tony Wendice (Ray Milland) as he carefully plots to kill his unfaithful wife, Margot (Grace Kelly). With an outstanding screenplay by Frederick Knott, adapted from his own original stage play, master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock utilizes all elements of his directorial skills to heighten the tension as the viewer anticipates how the plot may go horribly wrong. With supporting roles by Robert Cummings as Mark Halliday, Margot's American boyfriend, and John Williams, superb as Chief Inspector Hubbard, this diabolical nail-biter will keep you on the edge of your seat. The film is Rated PG and the running time is 105 minutes.
"Young At Heart" (2008) will be shown Oct. 26. This documentary is based on the lives of the Young At Heart Chorus, a group of 24 senior citizens with an average age of 81, whose unusual repertoire includes rock, punk and disco. Brought to the big screen by British filmmaker Stephen Walker, the film follows the group over a six-week rigorous rehearsal schedule, including practice at home, for an upcoming sold-out concert in their hometown. With both humor and heartbreak, the group faces the challenges of age and ill health with humility and determination to deliver an inspiring testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Rated PG for some mild language and thematic elements, the film runs 107 minutes.
