MENTAL HEALTH FORUM
On Oct. 11 from noon to 2 p.m., visit the library for an informational program on mental illness, sponsored By NAMI Family-York & NAMI Maine (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Literature on diagnoses and information on how to get help will be provided. Dr. Joshua P Cole, M.D., will answer questions. For more information contact Susan Babin at 363-2458.
SUNDAYS AT THE MOVIES
See "Dial M for Murder" on Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. and "Young at Heart" on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m.
BROWN BAG LUNCH SERIES
Psychic and Psychological Perspectives on Intuition will be offered on Oct. 14 at noon. Isabeau Esby and Dr. Joel Glenn Wixson will offer various perspectives on the topics of self-empowerment, awareness, living naturally, reducing stress, trust and fear. A question and answer session will follow. This program, hosted by the library, will be repeated on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
HARVESTFEST AT YPL
Special Harvestfest Story Hour will be held Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m. Harvestfest Book Sale Specials are set for Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
READER'S THEATER
"Democracy," a play by Michael Frayn about Willy Brandt's short tenure as chancellor of West Germany from 1969-1972, will be presented on Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 25 at 1:30 p.m., followed by a discussion with Karl Kaiser. The play is set in a time when relations with East Germany, Poland and the Soviet Union were being redefined, which eventually led to the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989.
ANNUAL LITERACY FAIR
The Eighth Annual Literacy Fair, hosted by the York Public Library along with the York Schools, will be held Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m. Don't miss this great event with activities and information for all ages.
IN THE CHILDREN'S ROOM
Infant Lapsits for those up to two years old are held on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. with stories, songs, fingerplays and rhymes. Preschool Story Hours will be held on Thursdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. for stories, songs, fingerplays, crafts and science. The Thursday programs with Miss Julie are designed for three and four year olds and the Friday story hours with Miss Kathleen are designed for two and three year olds.
Making Music Monthly is held the first Tuesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. This year, this music and movement program will be led by music teacher Lori Gundlah, and the October program will celebrate Halloween with music to shake, rattle and roll.
Tactile Toddler Time will be offered the second Tuesday of each month, beginning Oct. 14, from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Kimberly Whelan, preschool educator, brings her enthusiastic belief in the power of hands-on experiences to a monthly program designed to offer very young children a range of tactile experiences.
Art by the Pond will be held the third Tuesday of the month, beginning Oct. 21, from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Join graphic designer Jill Burke each month as she shares her love and knowledge of art through projects designed for children ages 3-6 and their caregivers.
After School is Cool returns in October with master gardener and knitter Martha Donnell offering a monthly program of knitting and Legos. Check back for specific dates and times.
TEEN READS MONTH
"Books with Bite" is the theme for Teen Reads Month. Special displays of these books can be found in the library's Teen Area. Add your own suggestions to the list!
VIDEOGAMING FOR TEENS
Teen Video Gaming Night will be offered Oct. 10 and 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., sponsored by the local "Gamers Rock." Participants must be at least 12 years old and have a permission slip signed by a parent. Advance registration is required. Please contact janaleemoquin8@yahoo.com or the library.
FALL CLEAN-UP
On Tuesdays from 8 to 9 a.m., Trustee Martha Donnell invites volunteers to join her to do regular grounds maintenance and prep work for Fall Clean-Up Day on Nov. 1. Lend a hand for an hour and help beautify the library's grounds.
ART EXHIBITS
Artist Jim Kelly exhibits his mixed media works in the library during the months of October and November. Titled "Urban Explorations", his work is about reinventing and recreating the new and vital from the old and discarded.
In the Kennebunk Room, Leslie Doherty, a member of the York Art Association and a multimedia artist known primarily for her landscapes and marine paintings, exhibits her art through October.
