YORK COUNTY - Why would anyone in Maine throw away $300 that could be used toward heating or other essential expenses?
Many older adults who normally don't file an income tax return may not know to file for their economic stimulus check. Time is running out. Some 22,000 Maine residents may still be eligible for the federal economic stimulus payment, but many of them might not know it.
The economic stimulus payment is a one time payment of $300 for individuals and $600 for married couples filing jointly and more if there are children in the home.
Altogether, more than $6.6 million dollars in Maine could go unclaimed if people do not file by Oct. 15.
Anyone with a qualifying income of at least $3,000 is eligible for this one-time payment.
Taxpayers who already filed a 2007 tax return began receiving their economic stimulus checks in the spring. They do not need to do anything more. But those who had no tax liability and did not file a 2007 tax return will lose out unless they file a 1040A form by Oct. 15. They must file a1040A form even if they do not owe any taxes in order to get their economic stimulus check.
Older adults who have questions should call the statewide toll-free number (877) 353-3771 to be connected to their local Agency on Aging for help claiming their economic stimulus payment. The phone number at the IRS is (800) 829-0582, Ext. 377.
