The Mount Agamenticus Conservation Region contains 10,000 acres of conservation land set amidst the largest expanse of coastal forest between Acadia and New Jersey. The region is known for its unique trail system as well as its rich natural resources including many vernal pools, rare plants and animals. State, local and non-profit landowners are working together to protect this land and to balance wildlife and water quality along with sustainable recreation. These landowners make up the Mount Agamenticus Steering Committee and include: the Towns of York and South Berwick, The York Water District, Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Great Works Regional Land Trust, York Land Trust and The Nature Conservancy.
Great Works Regional Land Trust invites residents to a Third Hill hike, also on Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bob Asquith will lead an intermediate level hike, with proper footwear required, from the York Land Trust's Hilton-Winn parking lot. This hike will cross private land, by permission, as well as land trust and state owned properties, with a final destination of the rocky top of Third Hill. The rain date is Oct. 26.
On Oct. 26 at 10 a.m., join the Great Works Land Trust and scout the hemlock woolly adelgid in the York Pond/Punkintown Road area with Maine Forest Service entomologist Allison Kanoti and learn how to identify trees and shrubs with her husband Keith Kanoti, also of Maine Forest Service. Meet in the Brixham Dancewear parking lot on Punkintown Road off of Route 236.
